As demand for oil increased during and after World War II, oil exploration flourished in Lafayette, Louisiana spurring the development of 15 major oil companies. This explosion of economic development created a need for corporate offices and businesses especially devoted to the oil and gas industry. So began construction of The Oil Center, a community devoted to the success of local oil and gas businesses. The district developed tremendous success and by 1959, 586 oil companies were based in Lafayette. Today The Oil Center serves more than just oil and gas companies, it is a hub for diverse businesses, shopping, dining and Cajun culture.
